Interview Summary
For project two, I conducted an interview with my friend Cassandra Roditis. Cassandra is going to be a junior at Florida State University in the fall and is a new member of the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority. Cassandra’s interview allowed me to gain perspective in what the philanthropy means to Zeta sisters and what it means to the city of Tallahassee. For this interview, I wrote out a series of questions, specifically ten, and sent them to her through text message. Cassandra informed me that a few of the questions required the same response from her point of view so questions ended up covering the interview overall. The first question I asked was: what was your sorority’s philanthropy? Cassandra informed me that Zeta’s philanthropy at FSU was Breast Cancer Awareness. My next question was: what is your fall event for your philanthropy. I discovered that Race to Live was the event, and this event was a 5k race. Following the introductory questions, I preceded to ask her about the detail about the event and what it meant to her and other sisters. From this interview, I discovered that Race to Live is a 5k race in which each Zeta sister registers a specific number of runners each year. The runners pay a fee and receive a breast cancer t-shirt. Each Zeta sister also has to raise a specific amount of money for this event. The event is promoted through each sister’s distribution of flyers and social media posts. The event is organized into teams or groups, each with their own tasks. One group is in charge of registration and handing out shirts. Another group deals with the donations and the money aspect. The last group is responsible for creating a positive environment and cheering on runners. This interview helped me realize that this philanthropy event was more than just a 5k, and it encompassed different approaches to raising money, awareness, and happiness. Throughout the interview Cassandra talked about how much this cause meant to her and her sisters. She talked about how the event is a favorite among sisters and how a variety of people come together to “recognize and honors survivors and fighters of breast cancer”. I gained an understanding into why she was “proud to be a Zeta”. Cassandra also touched on the statistics of breast cancer. She knew that one in eight women are diagnosed with breast cancer. She stated that she was not directly affected by breast cancer, but knew many sisters and people throughout the community that were and was glad to be able to give back to them. Lastly, we discussed the success of the event. The specific statistics are on the Zeta Tau Alpha Florida State University website, but she knew that it was successful enough that they made their cap for their philanthropy. We also discussed the spring event that they host and what organizations Zeta is tied too, but I do not plan on using that in my paper.
